According to industry sources on May 15, Chairman Chung attended a state banquet hosted by Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, ruler (Emir) of Qatar, for President Trump, who was visiting Qatar the previous day (local time). It is reported that Chairman Chung was the only Korean business leader invited to the event.
Broadcast cameras captured President Trump meeting and conversing with Chairman Chung before the banquet. Chairman Chung also greeted King Sheikh Tamim and expressed his keen interest in various exchanges between Korea and the Middle East, including Qatar.
Chairman Chung's visit to Qatar was made possible by an official invitation at the end of last month, based on an agreement between Qatar and the United States. It is reported that Chairman Chung was invited in recognition of his influence in U.S. relations in Asia.
Previously, in December last year, Chairman Chung was invited by Donald Trump Jr., the eldest son of President Trump, and stayed for six days and five nights at the Mar-a-Lago resort in Palm Beach, Florida, where President Trump resides. During this visit, he met with President Trump, who was then President-elect.
After Qatar, Chairman Chung plans to travel to Dubai, United Arab Emirates (UAE), to hold business meetings with local distribution industry leaders and explore various ways to leverage global communication capabilities for business performance. The UAE is the final stop on President Trump's Middle East tour.
