6,800 First-Time Voters Aged 18 to Participate in Presidential Election
Democratic Education Enhanced with "Visiting Election Class" for Elementary and Middle School Students
The Jeonnam Provincial Office of Education announced on May 15 that it is conducting "First-time Voter Education" for high school students who will be participating in their first-ever vote ahead of the 21st presidential election.
With voting rights now extended to those aged 18 and older starting from this presidential election, approximately 6,800 student voters in Jeonnam will have the opportunity to cast their precious votes for the first time.
Accordingly, each high school is conducting pre-election education using lecture materials and video resources provided by the Provincial Office of Education, focusing on practical topics such as political laws, voting procedures, and important election guidelines. In particular, education to prevent violations of election law is also being provided in parallel, supporting students to participate in voting safely and responsibly.
The Provincial Office of Education is also strengthening democratic citizenship education not only for first-time voters but also for future voters among elementary and middle school students. The "Visiting Democracy Election Class," operated in cooperation with the Jeonnam Election Commission, consists of experiential programs such as the principles of democracy and elections, policy comparison activities, and mock voting and debates, which have been well received by students and have encouraged their active participation.
In particular, since the 2·3 Martial Law Incident, the importance of constitutional education has been continuously emphasized. Reflecting this, efforts have been made to establish a foundation for democratic citizenship education by providing principal training, distributing teaching and learning materials, and developing educational resources related to suffrage.
Superintendent Kim Daejung stated, "We will continue to strengthen systematic education so that students can grow not just as voters but as key players in democracy," and added, "I hope that first-time voters will experience the true value of their rights in the upcoming presidential election."
