Cheonan City's Population Surpasses 700,000... "Aiming for a City of One Million"

Cheonan City in South Chungcheong Province announced on May 15 that, as of May 14, its total population had surpassed 700,000, reaching 700,029 residents.

Kim Seokpil, acting mayor, held a press conference in the city hall briefing room on the same day and explained that the population had increased by approximately 2,730 compared to the end of last year, when it stood at 697,299.

When the city was promoted to city status in 1963, the population was only 62,000. Over the past 62 years, it has increased more than elevenfold.

The daytime population, including commuters and students, also surpassed 1.7 million as of March.

Although the natural population has been decreasing since 2023 due to a demographic crossover, where the number of deaths exceeds the number of births, the city's population has continued to grow as 600 to 800 people move in each month.

The city cited several factors for the population increase: improvement of residential conditions, expansion of infrastructure, urban development, and job creation.

In particular, over the past five years, the city has attracted 1,080 companies, bringing in investments totaling 15.789 trillion won and creating 30,415 new jobs.

Additionally, through its startup incubation program, the city has supported the growth of 321 companies over the past four years, attracting investments totaling 89.4 billion won. This has resulted in the creation of 693 jobs.

Furthermore, since March, the city has announced population structure improvement goals, such as achieving a total fertility rate of 1.0, a youth population ratio of 33%, and a daytime population of 2 million, and is implementing related projects.

Kim Seokpil, acting mayor, emphasized, "I believe Cheonan can accommodate a population of 1.5 million. At the current pace, the population is expected to surpass 800,000 by 2035 and 1 million by 2050. We will not be satisfied with 700,000 and will continue striving to make Cheonan a happy and comfortable city to live in."
