Baekho, President of Seoul Metro, Visits Integrated Control Center Construction Site for Safety Inspection on May 14
Strengthening CEO Safety Accountability Through 'Intensive Safety Inspection' of High-Risk Facilities Led by the Ministry of the Interior and Safety
On May 14, Baekho, President of Seoul Metro, visited the construction site of the 'SMART Integrated Control Center for Lines 1 to 9' and conducted a site safety inspection.
The construction of the Integrated Control Center aims to address the difficulties caused by the separate operation of control centers for each subway line by integrating the control centers for Lines 1 to 9 and upgrading the aging existing control systems. The project involves demolishing the existing Gunja Vehicle Depot Welfare Center and constructing a new building with two basement levels and six above-ground floors. The project is a comprehensive construction effort that includes civil engineering, architecture, landscaping, and demolition. Construction began in December 2021, with the goal of completing the building phase by October this year.
This site inspection was conducted as part of the 'Intensive Safety Inspection' led by the Ministry of the Interior and Safety. The Intensive Safety Inspection is a safety management activity that aims to proactively identify risk factors and create a safer daily environment by conducting focused inspections of vulnerable facilities where disasters and safety accidents are a concern. During the inspection period (April 14 to June 13, 2025), Seoul Metro plans to inspect eight high-risk sites, including the Integrated Control Center construction site.
For this inspection of the Integrated Control Center, not only officials from Seoul Metro but also external experts in civil engineering, architecture, and industrial safety participated, enhancing the effectiveness of the inspection. The joint inspection team focused on checking the management status of fall prevention facilities, such as the installation of safety railings at the edges of slabs, as well as the overall safety management of the construction site. President Baekho personally examined the site to assess the severity of safety hazards and reinforced accountability for safety management.
President Baekho stated, "This inspection, conducted jointly by the public and private sectors, provided a valuable opportunity to objectively assess the state of safety management at the construction site with the participation of external experts. We will make even greater efforts to ensure thorough safety management by actively reflecting external opinions not only in the construction of the Integrated Control Center but also at other sites."
