July 14-15 at Lotte Concert Hall and Seoul Arts Center
Performing works by Brahms, Rachmaninoff, and Strauss
Pianist Lim Yunchan will present an intimate duo performance with his mentor, Professor Son Minsoo of the New England Conservatory.
On May 14, Hyundai Card announced that it will hold the "Hyundai Card Culture Project 30 Son Minsoo & Lim Yunchan" on July 14 and 15. Professor Son Minsoo and Lim Yunchan will perform works for two pianos by Johannes Brahms, Sergei Rachmaninoff, and Richard Strauss. The concert on July 14 will take place at Lotte Concert Hall in Songpa-gu, Seoul, while the July 15 performance will be held at the Concert Hall of the Seoul Arts Center in Seocho-gu.
The two pianists will open with Brahms' "Sonata for Two Pianos." This masterpiece is characterized by Brahms' meticulous structure and romantic sensibility, and its grand composition and dramatic development allow the audience to experience the performers' close musical rapport and depth.
This will be followed by Rachmaninoff's "Symphonic Dances for Two Pianos." "Symphonic Dances" was Rachmaninoff's final work, and he left two versions: one for orchestra and another arranged for two pianos. The "Symphonic Dances for Two Pianos" is a challenging piece, as it requires the pianists to capture the richness and dramatic tension of an orchestral work using only two pianos.
For the final piece, Professor Son Minsoo and Lim Yunchan will perform Strauss' "Der Rosenkavalier Suite for Two Pianos." The original suite weaves together music from key scenes of Strauss' opera "Der Rosenkavalier," featuring delicate and elegant waltz melodies. In this concert, they will perform a piano duo arrangement by Lee Hanwool, winner of the composition category at the Bartok International Competition.
From July 16 to August 3, Professor Son Minsoo and Lim Yunchan are also scheduled to perform Brahms' "Sonata for Two Pianos" and Strauss' "Der Rosenkavalier Suite for Two Pianos" at the 2025 Verbier Festival in Verbier, Switzerland. This means Korean audiences will have the opportunity to experience their performance ahead of the festival.
Further details about the concert can be found on the Hyundai Card DIVE app and website.
