Han Gil Jeon, a Korean history instructor who became controversial after publicly expressing support for former President Yoon Suk Yeol, has stepped down from teaching.
On May 14, a notice titled "Guidelines for Course Enrollment Following the Retirement of Instructor Han Gil Jeon" was posted on the Mega Public Official website. Mega Public Official stated, "We regret to deliver disappointing news to all students and members who have studied with Instructor Han Gil Jeon's lectures," and added, "Due to Instructor Han Gil Jeon's retirement, our contract with him has ended."
As a result, no new Han Gil Jeon Korean history lectures will be added. For existing courses, students can continue to purchase and enroll until the final service termination date of October 31, 2026. Han Gil Jeon's instructor homepage will also be available until that date. However, Mega Public Official noted that the learning Q&A board will not be operated, and advised students to use Han Gil Jeon's personal online cafe for inquiries.
Additionally, Mega Public Official announced that, to minimize inconvenience and negative impact on test-takers, it will purchase courses from other Korean history instructors and provide them to current students. The company explained, "Any student who has taken at least one of Han Gil Jeon’s courses through Mega Pass by May 31, 2025, will be eligible to enroll in Moon Donggyun’s 2025 preparatory and new courses." The courses will be provided in early June 2025 and will be available for study until June 30, 2027. Moon Donggyun is a top Korean history instructor affiliated with the public official online lecture site Gongdangi.
Previously, on April 8, Han Gil Jeon hinted at retirement on his YouTube channel "Han Gil Jeon News," saying, "I have been teaching for 26 years, but these days I am wondering if I should quit."
At the time, he shared, "After the martial law incident, my life changed completely in just three to four months. I was called trash by a friend, my wife asked for a divorce, many students who once said they respected me told me they were disappointed, and I lost contact with everyone around me." He continued, "I used to appear on TV frequently, but I was dismissed from the main broadcaster. Also, I was completely edited out from Netflix's 'Poksak Sokassuda.' I used to live respected and well-off, but my fate has changed completely."
