Gwangju Namgu: Enjoy the Baekyangro Friday and Saturday Night Market Until June Gwangju Namgu held the Baekyangro Geumto Night Market near Baegun Square Green Road Bridge and the Street Food Zone. Provided by Gwangju Namgu

On May 14, Gwangju Namgu announced that it had opened the Baekyangro Friday and Saturday Night Market near Baegun Square Green Road Bridge and the Street Food Zone.

The Baekyangro Friday and Saturday Night Market, which held its opening ceremony on May 10, will feature a variety of performances and food events every Friday and Saturday until the end of June.

This year, as part of efforts to revitalize the alleyway economy around Baegun Square, the district is providing funding secured through selection in the Ministry of SMEs and Startups' "2025 Traditional Market and Shopping District Revitalization Support Project" to the Baegun Square Alleyway Shopping District Merchants Association.

The Baegun Square Friday and Saturday Night Market is a public-private partnership project between the district office and the merchants association. In May of last year, when the night market first opened, Namgu supported its successful launch by designating car-free streets, operating water-spraying vehicles to cool the heat, and hosting various performances and events, concentrating administrative resources for three months to help the night market become established.

Since August last year, the merchants association has independently managed all aspects of the night market's operation, and as large crowds have gathered, the area around Baegun Square has transformed into a representative food alley.

However, due to the nationwide economic downturn that began at the end of last year, the merchants association was deeply concerned about whether the night market could be held this year. With the selection of the government support project, the night market was able to reopen, and merchants in the Baekyangro area have regained their optimism.

To ensure stable operation of the night market, the district will provide visitors with a variety of performances and attractions every week. In addition, on Saturdays (excluding Fridays), the area around the Street Food Zone will be operated as a car-free street.

Along with the night market, the district will also create detailed Naver Place pages to promote 10 stores in the Baegun Square alleyway shopping district online, and will train market managers to support the administrative work and marketing of Baekyangro merchants.

A district official stated, "Since the Baegun Square Friday and Saturday Night Market began last year, the number of visitors has noticeably increased, and in the current situation of an extreme economic downturn, we expect the night market to greatly contribute to revitalizing the alleyway economy."
