Jeollanamdo Agricultural Research and Extension Services Secures 14 Billion KRW in National R&D Funding Jeollanamdo Agricultural Research and Extension Services recently secured a total of 14 billion KRW in research funding after 38 national R&D projects were selected in a government research and development public contest. This funding will support the development of various rural technologies, including smart agriculture technology utilizing artificial intelligence. Provided by Jeonnam Province

On May 14, Jeollanamdo Agricultural Research and Extension Services announced that it had secured a total of 14 billion KRW in research funding after 38 national projects were selected in government research and development (R&D) public contests conducted by four institutions, including the Rural Development Administration and the Korea Institute of Planning and Evaluation for Technology in Food, Agriculture and Forestry.

The selected projects will be carried out over the next three to five years and focus on areas such as responding to the climate crisis, developing smart agriculture technologies including intelligent nutrient management and generative artificial intelligence (AI), upcycling agricultural by-products, and fostering regionally specialized crops in Jeonnam. The projects are concentrated on the development, demonstration, and practical application of agricultural science and technology.

Specifically, 31 projects were chosen under the 'Agricultural Science and Technology R&D Project' led by the Rural Development Administration, including the development of new major crop varieties and evaluation of suitable cultivation areas for long-grain rice.

Two projects, including the 'Development of Stable Production Technology for Heukhharang High-Content Functional Sleep Ingredient,' were selected in the public contest by the Korea Institute of Planning and Evaluation for Technology in Food, Agriculture and Forestry, while four projects related to the commercialization of smart greenhouse management systems for cold-tolerant crops using generative AI were selected by the Multi-Ministry Smart Farm R&D Project Group.

In particular, Jeollanamdo Agricultural Research and Extension Services was honored with the '2024 Award for Outstanding Institution in Regional Specialized Crop Research Achievements,' recognizing its contributions to the development of local agriculture and economic revitalization.

Jeonnam Province also secured an additional 3.6 billion KRW in research and development support for four of its representative regionally specialized crops: citron, tea, fig, and coffee.

Kim Haengran, Director of Jeollanamdo Agricultural Research and Extension Services, stated, "These achievements are the result of excellent research management capabilities combined with the continuous self-development of our young researchers. We will continue to provide ongoing research support and innovation so that Jeonnam can achieve the highest agricultural income in the nation."
