Penetration Testing Simulations as a Top Priority Task
SK Group has established the Special Committee for Information Security Innovation, which includes external experts, and has begun company-wide management to strengthen customer information protection and security capabilities. Choi Changwon, Chairman of the SUPEX Council, will serve as the chairperson of the committee, and external experts from academia and industry will be appointed to conduct penetration testing simulations.
On May 14, SK Group announced the launch of the independent Special Committee for Information Security Innovation, a specialized body designed to detect and prevent security risks within its affiliates in advance and to enhance its security capabilities. The committee will be chaired by Choi Changwon, Chairman of the SUPEX Council, with Yoon Poongyoung, President of SK Inc. AX, serving as vice chairperson in charge of operations. Members will include the chair of the Governance Committee, SK Inc., SK Innovation, SK Hynix, SK Telecom, and other strategic committee affiliates, as well as B2C affiliates such as SK Networks, SK Broadband, and SK Square. The committee plans to hold regular monthly meetings and operate technical working groups to improve execution.
To ensure the committee’s security expertise and operational objectivity, external security experts from academia and industry have also been officially appointed as members. Kwon Heonyoung, a professor at Korea University and former chairperson of the Digital Government Innovation Committee, will serve as the external advisory chair. Other members include Choi Kyungjin, a professor at Gachon University and authority in personal information protection; Lee Byoungyoung, a systems security expert and professor at Seoul National University; and Kim Yongdae, a distinguished professor at KAIST ICT and former director of the KAIST Cyber Security Research Center. Field experts such as Park Sejoon, CEO of Theory and awardee at international hacking competitions, and Park Chanam, CEO of Stealien and currently serving as a cybersecurity advisor to prosecutors and police, will also participate as advisors.
The committee will operate the Information Security Innovation Team, centered on cybersecurity executives from the SUPEX Council and SK Inc., while also collaborating with the Chief Information Security Officers (CISO) and legal and compliance departments of major affiliates to implement detailed initiatives.
The committee plans to elevate the group’s security to a world-class level based on actionable initiatives. As a first step, it will conduct penetration testing simulations. These tests, which will use real hacking techniques to identify and address system vulnerabilities across all group affiliates, will be carried out by specialized security companies that have won awards at domestic and international hacking competitions.
In addition, SK Telecom’s information protection system will be reorganized to meet global standards and will undergo external verification. Measures to strengthen customer information protection will be established for all affiliates, along with comprehensive consulting on the five core areas of security: governance, identification, protection, detection, and response. The current security level of each affiliate will be precisely analyzed, and customized improvement tasks?such as the expanded adoption of intelligent, learning-based security solutions reflecting the results of penetration testing?will be identified and immediately implemented. The committee also plans to actively invest in the latest security technologies, including responses to advanced persistent threats, industrial security, and artificial intelligence (AI) security.
