Hampyeong County in South Jeolla Province announced on May 13 that it will launch the "Hampyeongcheon Area Comprehensive Development Project Master Plan Study," aimed at transforming Hampyeongcheon Stream into a premium waterway and systematically developing the surrounding idle land to revitalize the region.
Hampyeongcheon Stream, which runs through the center of Hampyeong-eup, is a representative local river and has long served as both a living space and a valuable natural asset for local residents.
However, despite the growing demand for leisure and tourism and the expanding role of rivers from flood control and water supply to "water-friendly spaces," Hampyeongcheon Stream currently lacks sufficient water-friendly facilities to meet these needs.
Accordingly, through the master plan, the county intends to create water-friendly spaces by utilizing river areas such as floodplains and sandbars, and to establish mid- to long-term development plans for idle land around Hampyeongcheon Stream, ultimately turning Hampyeongcheon Stream into a landmark representing the county.
In particular, this project is expected to have a positive effect on increasing tourist stay time, attracting new residents, and revitalizing the local economy by linking with local festivals such as the "Hampyeong Butterfly Festival" and the "Korea Chrysanthemum Festival."
County Governor Lee Sangik stated, "Through comprehensive development centered on Hampyeongcheon Stream, we hope to improve the quality of life for local residents and inject new vitality into the local economy," adding, "We will devise innovative development strategies to overcome the crisis of local extinction."
