The Gwangju City Government, together with the local business community and companies, has launched a joint initiative to expand workers' participation in voting and to guarantee their suffrage rights.
On the morning of May 13, Gwangju City held the "21st Presidential Election Workers and Small Business Owners Voting Participation Pledge" at the meeting room of the Hanam Workers' Welfare Center in Gwangsan District. The event was organized to create an environment where workers can vote in the early voting period (May 29-30) or on the main voting day (June 3) without facing any disadvantages.
The event was attended by representatives from Gwangju City and Gwangsan District, as well as 22 leaders from organizations and related groups, including the Gwangju Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the Korea Employers Federation, the Small Business Association, the Merchants Association, the Hanam Industrial Complex Management Corporation, and the Hanam, Pyeongdong, and Cheomdan Industrial Complex Councils.
The participants pledged, under the principle of "respect for workers' exercise of their sovereignty," to actively guarantee workers' voting rights, to foster an environment where workers can freely participate in both early and main voting, to comply with the Public Official Election Act and related laws, and to contribute to the realization of democratic values and the development of the community through voting participation.
Through this pledge, the city aims to ensure that democracy thrives in the workplace and to strengthen cooperation systems so that companies can voluntarily participate in upholding democratic values.
Mayor Kang Kijeong emphasized, "This presidential election is an important opportunity to reaffirm the fundamental principles of democracy through voting and to determine the future vision of Gwangju in areas such as industry and the economy. In particular, since this year's presidential election early voting days fall on weekdays that overlap with workdays, careful consideration from companies is necessary. Gwangju City will also carry out proactive administration so that citizens can participate in voting more conveniently."
