The HRS list selects researchers who rank within the top 0.05% worldwide, based on analysis of more than 200 million academic publications and over 30 million scholar profiles, considering factors such as citation counts and H-index. The analysis covers researchers from all academic fields globally, including retired or deceased scholars who are no longer active. Selection is divided into 'lifetime' and 'past five years' achievement categories. Since 2023, ScholarGPS has been announcing the HRS list for the previous year every May.

Professor Sung Hwa Jung has been actively conducting research on removing hazardous compounds from water or petroleum through adsorption or catalytic methods, as well as eliminating carbon dioxide and fine dust from the atmosphere via adsorption. His related research achievements are cited more than 10 times per day on average. He has recorded a total of 37,400 citations and an H-index of 99 (according to Google Scholar). As of May 13, he has 18 Highly Cited Papers (HCP) in the top 1% of citations.

Additionally, Professor Jung was selected as a Highly Cited Researcher (HCR) by Clarivate, a global information analytics company, for five consecutive years from 2018 to 2022. He was elected as a regular member of the Korean Academy of Science and Technology in 2022 and received the Order of Science and Technology Merit, Ungbi Medal, in 2023, earning recognition for his academic achievements both domestically and internationally.

Professor Jung stated, "Being selected as an HRS or HCR is highly meaningful, as it reflects not just the number of papers published, but the extent to which my work is cited and contributes to other research."
