Chosun University School of Dentistry and Dental Hospital announced on the 13th that they had conducted integrated oral health screening volunteer activities for local senior citizens in collaboration with the Gwangju Dong-gu Public Health Center.
The volunteer activities, which took place over two days last month at the Dementia Relief Center and Bitgoeul General Social Welfare Center, involved medical staff including Kim Heejung, Dean of the School of Dentistry at Chosun University, Min Jeongbeom, Director of Clinical Services at the Dental Hospital, and 10 dental students.
This initiative was part of the "Visiting Early Dementia Screening" program promoted by the Dong-gu Public Health Center in Gwangju. Under the supervision of the Dong-gu Dementia Relief Center, the program operated by visiting eight local institutions that provide job opportunities for the elderly in the area.
The medical staff provided oral examinations, tooth brushing education, and fluoride application for senior citizens who had already completed memory and depression tests and chronic disease screenings such as blood pressure and blood sugar measurements. Depending on the results, they also offered referrals and support for further examinations and treatment for those who needed more detailed care.
Kim Heejung, Dean of Chosun University School of Dentistry, stated, "Oral health is closely linked to overall health, so caring for the health of local senior citizens is one of the essential social responsibilities that the university must fulfill." He added, "Going forward, the School of Dentistry and Dental Hospital will continue to collaborate with the Dong-gu District Office to provide regular, prevention-focused screenings and a variety of health-related volunteer activities."
