Samsung Unveils Galaxy S25 Edge: Ultra-Thin, Lightweight AI Phone Promises Cool Performance

Enhanced Durability... "A Balance of Design and Engineering"
Launching on the 23rd... Prices Starting at 1,496,000 KRW
AI Features Remain... "High Preference Expected Among Teens to 30s"

On May 13, Samsung Electronics unveiled the Galaxy S25 Edge, an ultra-slim and ultra-lightweight AI smartphone that is the thinnest in the history of the S series. The company explained that the device features a design that is 30% thinner than the existing Galaxy S25 Ultra, a lighter weight, a variety of AI functions, and robust durability.

Sungtaek Lim, Vice President and Head of Samsung Electronics Korea, introduced the Galaxy S25 Edge at 'Samsung Gangnam' in Seocho-gu, Seoul, and stated, "We are delighted to be the first in the world to launch the thinnest ultra-slim AI phone in the history of the Galaxy S series here in Korea." Samsung plans to sell the Galaxy S25 Edge in over 30 countries, starting with Korea and expanding to China, Europe, and other regions. The company also hinted at the possibility of continuously releasing such ultra-slim and ultra-lightweight smartphones as a key pillar of the S series in the future.

Through a video message, Tae Moon Roh, President and Head of the DX Division at Samsung Electronics, emphasized, "The Galaxy S25 Edge is a product that transcends the limits of ultra-slim technology to revolutionize user experience. It establishes a new category in the industry by achieving a perfect balance between design and engineering craftsmanship."

Not Just a 'Thin' Phone... Enhanced Durability and Cooling System

The Galaxy S25 Edge features a slim design with a thickness of just 5.8mm and a weight of 163g, achieved through precise hardware engineering and weight reduction. Compared to the Galaxy S25 Ultra, which launched earlier this year (8.2mm, 218g), the thickness has been reduced by nearly 30% and the weight by 25%. Sunghoon Moon, Vice President of Smartphone Development Team 1 at the MX Division, stated, "We have achieved not only slimness but also beauty and uncompromising technological excellence. After years of developing multiple prototypes and combining components, we have finally been able to introduce this hardware innovation."

Another key feature is the enhanced durability and improved heat dissipation system. The front display uses 'Corning Gorilla Glass Ceramic 2,' a new glass-ceramic material for mobile devices, to strengthen resistance to damage and cracks. The company explained that it is designed to provide improved glass-ceramic strength through synergy between glass and crystals, while maintaining high optical transparency. Samsung Electronics and Corning have maintained a partnership for over 50 years, beginning with the establishment of a joint venture in 1973 for domestic TV distribution. Vice President Moon added, "We optimized the hardware so that all circuit components do not overlap or collide, even in the event of external impact."

The device is equipped with a redesigned vapor chamber that is thinner and wider, allowing for effective heat control during prolonged use. The vapor chamber is a key component that circulates coolant to facilitate efficient heat dissipation. Vice President Moon explained, "The vapor chamber was made thinner through years of effort, not just by increasing its surface area. Despite being a thin phone, we expect users will have no concerns about overheating." In addition, the titanium frame and IP68-rated water and dust resistance ensure stable usability in various everyday environments.

Camera Enhanced by AI and Equipped with Snapdragon Chipset

The Galaxy S25 Edge is equipped with a 200-megapixel ultra-high-resolution wide-angle camera. It also features a 12-megapixel ultra-wide lens for capturing wider frames in a single shot, and an auto-focus (AF) function for macro photography. However, there is no rear telephoto camera, so features like 100x digital zoom are not available.

The next-generation 'Pro Visual Engine' enhances clarity and detail, and produces more natural skin tones in portrait photos. All Galaxy AI-based editing features available in the Galaxy S25 series are fully supported. A variety of editing tools, including Audio Eraser, Sketch Conversion, and Generative Edit, enable users to create high-quality content.

Through collaboration with Google, the device also offers an upgraded 'Real-Time Visual AI' feature. Moving beyond voice and text-based tasks, it now includes a 'Screen Share' function, allowing users to point their camera at their surroundings and receive real-time responses as if conversing with a friend.

The chipset is the 'Snapdragon 8 Elite for Galaxy,' the most powerful Galaxy-exclusive chipset to date, as used in the Galaxy S25 series. The device offers enhanced on-device AI processing capabilities and delivers fast and stable performance. However, the battery capacity is 3,900mA, which is 1,100mA less than the Galaxy S25 Ultra (5,000mA). Vice President Moon commented, "We have improved component power consumption, so there should be no issues with usage."

Prices Start at 1,496,000 KRW... Positioned Between S25 Plus and Ultra

The product is available in three colors: Silver, Jet Black, and Ice Blue, with models offering 256GB and 512GB of storage priced at 1,496,000 KRW and 1,639,000 KRW, respectively. This positions the Galaxy S25 Edge between the Galaxy S25 Plus (1,353,000 KRW for 256GB) and the Ultra (1,698,400 KRW for 256GB). Samsung Electronics will officially launch the Galaxy S25 Edge in Korea on May 23, with pre-orders running from May 14 to May 20.

During a Q&A session with reporters, Vice President Lim stated, "We expect strong sales for the Galaxy S25 Edge. Surveys show high preference among customers in their teens through thirties, so we are confident it will sell more than its predecessor." Minseok Kang, Executive Director of the CX Office at the MX Division, commented on future plans for slim models, saying, "This time, we have prepared the Galaxy S25 Edge as a key model in the 'Galaxy S25 Family.' We are actively researching how to best operate slim models in the future. We aim to enhance not only thinness but also consumer experience, product completeness, and innovation."

Customers who pre-order the 256GB model of the Galaxy S25 Edge during the pre-sale period will receive a 'Double Storage' benefit, upgrading their storage to 512GB. In addition, the device is available through the 'New Galaxy AI Subscription Club,' which has a monthly fee of 5,900 KRW. Customers who purchase the Galaxy S25 Edge unlocked model through the New Galaxy AI Subscription Club will receive benefits such as up to 50% residual value compensation when returning the device, 'Samsung Care Plus Smartphone Damage+' coverage, and discounts on mobile accessories. Customers who purchase both the newly released Galaxy Ring and the Galaxy S25 Edge together will receive a 20% discount on the Galaxy Ring and 100,000 KRW in Samsung Electronics membership points.

Mobile carriers are also conducting pre-orders for the Galaxy S25 Edge. KT and LG Uplus will accept pre-orders for seven days from May 14 to May 20 at KT stores nationwide and the official online store KT.com. For KT customers, the 'Double Storage' benefit is offered, upgrading the 256GB device to 512GB. LG Uplus will give a 'Uplus.com Coupon' to the first 1,000 pre-order customers, offering discounts ranging from a minimum of 10,000 KRW to a maximum of 200,000 KRW.
