Tecno "Spark Slim" Is Thinner Than Galaxy S25 Edge
But Lags Behind in Features Due to Lower Specifications
Samsung Electronics has officially entered the "thinness competition" with Chinese smartphone manufacturers by unveiling the Galaxy S25 Edge, the thinnest ultra-slim smartphone in the history of the Galaxy series.
In terms of thickness alone, the "Spark Slim" made by the Chinese manufacturer Tecno currently takes the lead. Scheduled for release in the second half of this year, it is expected to launch at a thickness of 5.75mm, which is 0.05mm thinner than the Galaxy S25 Edge (5.8mm, 163g). It is also lighter, weighing 146g, which is 17g less. The device drew attention two months ago when it was introduced at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2025 held in Barcelona, Spain.
However, when it comes to features, the Spark Slim falls far behind the Galaxy S25 Edge, which offers water and dust resistance, a high-spec camera, and advanced artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities. Tecno is a brand under the Transsion Group, mainly supplying mid-range smartphones to emerging markets such as Africa and Southeast Asia. While it may have a physical advantage in thickness, the Spark Slim is clearly distinguished from the flagship Galaxy S25 Edge as it is a practical device equipped with a basic camera and priced around $200.
In February, OPPO, a brand under China’s BBK Group, also introduced the "OPPO Find N5," claiming it to be "the world’s thinnest phone" at 4.21mm. However, this is a foldable phone. Even so, according to foreign media outlets such as SamMobile, it is still 0.3mm thicker than Samsung’s soon-to-be-released latest foldable phone, the Galaxy Z Fold7.
In fact, Chinese manufacturers were once ahead in ultra-thin smartphone technology. In 2014, Vivo released the X5 Max at 4.75mm, and OPPO launched the R5 at 4.85mm. However, these products faced technical limitations due to their extremely slim designs, such as issues with cooling systems, battery life, and structural strength. As a result, no follow-up models were released, and the trend faded. Subsequently, Chinese manufacturers shifted their focus from thin phones to enhancing camera performance and introducing foldable phones.
An industry official commented, "If you look at the thickness figures alone, China released thinner products first, but the Galaxy S25 Edge satisfies market demands for both thinness and high performance and durability. The competition for thinness is now evolving into a competition for technological completeness."
