Workshop Held for Principals and Teachers of 31 Leading Schools on Foreign Language Education Policy
On May 13, the Gyeonggi Provincial Office of Education (Superintendent Lim Taehee) announced that starting in 2025, it will fully implement the 'Gyeonggi Foreign Language Future Education Leading School-LAON' project. The initiative aims to foster 'glocal convergence talents' with communication skills and multicultural sensitivity through innovation in English classes based on 'edutech' and diversification of foreign language education.

The 'Gyeonggi Foreign Language Future Education Leading School-LAON' is a school that utilizes 'edutech' to provide student-tailored foreign language education, with the goal of nurturing talents equipped with future career exploration capabilities. The leading schools were selected last month through an open call, with one school chosen from each of the 31 cities and counties in the province, and the program will be operated starting in May.
The core tasks of 'Leading School-LAON' include promoting student-tailored English classes using 'artificial intelligence (AI)-based edutech.' Specifically, this involves operating '(elementary) AI PengTalk and Hi-Learning' and '(secondary) English classes utilizing Hi-Learning.'
The elective tasks, which each school may autonomously select and implement, include: ▲ School-specific foreign language curricula reflecting the 2022 revised curriculum ▲ Student-tailored foreign language classes to reduce private education expenses ▲ Theme-based and subject-integrated foreign language project classes ▲ Special foreign language programs for glocal convergence talents ▲ Foreign language education programs in collaboration with local communities.
The provincial office plans to develop a variety of foreign language education models suitable for the circumstances of each region and school through the leading schools representing the 31 cities and counties, and to share these models with all schools across the province.
Meanwhile, on May 12, a workshop was held at the Millitopia Hotel in Seongnam to support the operation of the leading schools. Sixty-two principals and staff members attended the workshop, which covered topics such as: ▲ Trends in 'AI-edutech' English education ▲ Understanding of special foreign language education ▲ Sharing of English class cases using 'AI PengTalk' and 'Hi-Learning.'
Hyun Gyemyeong, Director of Convergence Education at the Gyeonggi Provincial Office of Education, stated, "This leading school initiative will mark a new chapter in foreign language education in Gyeonggi Province," and added, "We will reduce the burden of private education by innovating foreign language education centered on public education, and strengthen the cultivation of glocal talents with diverse language competencies."
