"Return of 110 Million Won"... Dobong District Launches Local Tax Refund Cleanup

Intensive Cleanup Throughout May
Approximately 6,831 Cases Targeted, About 110 Million Won in Unclaimed Refunds

"Return of 110 Million Won"... Dobong District Launches Local Tax Refund Cleanup

Dobong District in Seoul (District Mayor Oh Eon-seok) has announced that it will make a concentrated effort throughout May to help residents claim their local tax refunds.

Local tax refunds arise from various situations. The main causes include the scrapping of a vehicle or transfer of ownership after paying automobile tax in advance, tax adjustments following national tax reassessments, and double payments.

The district sends out KakaoTalk notifications and refund notices every month to encourage residents to claim their refunds. However, a significant amount of unclaimed refunds still remains.

As of the end of April 2025, the total amount of unclaimed refunds stands at approximately 110 million won (a total of 6,831 cases). To address this, the district will conduct a "Local Tax Refund Cleanup" campaign throughout May.

The district will update the addresses of eligible recipients and send out notices in bulk. If the intended recipient is deceased, the notice will be delivered to the primary heir.

For those with large unclaimed amounts, the district plans to provide direct guidance on the refund process through phone calls or home visits.

Individuals can also check for unclaimed refunds themselves. Inquiries and refund account registration are available through Seoul's ETAX, Wetax, and Government24 platforms.

A district official emphasized, "When applying for a refund, only your account number is required. Any request for your card number or password is likely to be an electronic financial scam, so please exercise caution."

Oh Eon-seok, Mayor of Dobong District, stated, "Since the right to claim a local tax refund expires five years from the date it arises, I urge everyone to check and exercise their rights, even if the amount is small."
