Sacheon City Council Strengthens Promotion to Activate Resident Ordinance Petition System

Online and Offline Promotion to Improve Resident Awareness

On May 13, Sacheon City Council announced that it will further strengthen its promotional efforts this year to activate the resident ordinance petition system, which allows residents to directly create ordinances necessary for their local community.

The "resident ordinance petition system" is a system that enables residents to directly request the enactment, revision, or repeal of ordinances from the chairperson of the local council through a petition signed by a certain number of residents. In January 2022, the "Act on Resident Ordinance Initiative" and the "Sacheon City Council Ordinance on Resident Ordinance Initiative" went into effect.

However, since the implementation of the system, there have been no cases of resident ordinance petitions in Sacheon. In response, Sacheon City Council plans to conduct both online and offline promotional activities in various ways to improve residents' awareness and provide more opportunities for participation, specifically by informing them about the petition procedures and key details of the resident ordinance system.

During the recent 30th anniversary of Sacheon City's unification, the council actively promoted the system on the streets, for example by distributing promotional fans at the Citizen's Day event.

On July 3, an explanatory session on the resident ordinance petition system, organized by the Gyeongsangnam-do Provincial Council, is scheduled to be held at the main auditorium of Sacheon City Library.

Sacheon City Council will also continue its online promotional activities, including through social media, to further raise residents' awareness of the resident ordinance petition system and provide more opportunities for participation.

Kim Kyuhun, the chairperson, stated, "This year will be a year in which we make even greater efforts to improve awareness of the resident ordinance petition system," and added, "Through continuous promotional activities, we will actively support the substantial activation of resident ordinance petitions."
