Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky requested the new Pope Leo XIV to visit Ukraine on the 12th (local time).
On the same day, President Zelensky posted on his X (formerly Twitter) account, saying, "I had a very warm and sincere first conversation with Pope Leo XIV," and added, "I thanked His Holiness for his support for Ukraine and our people."

He stated, "We discussed the thousands of Ukrainian children who have been forcibly deported by Russia," and continued, "Ukraine hopes, with the support of the Vatican, to have these children returned to their homes and families."
President Zelensky went on to say, "I informed the Pope that, in accordance with the agreement between Ukraine and its partner countries, a comprehensive and unconditional ceasefire should begin for at least 30 days starting today." He added, "Ukraine has reaffirmed its readiness to engage in further negotiations in any form, including direct dialogue."
He further stated, "I requested Pope Leo XIV to visit Ukraine," expressing hope that "this visit would bring genuine hope to all believers and our people."
