Gwangju City, the City Office of Education, and the five autonomous districts have made a joint resolution on six key action areas to encourage citizens to participate in voting ahead of the 21st presidential election.
On the morning of the 12th, Gwangju City held a joint press conference in the city hall briefing room to encourage voter participation in the 21st presidential election. Attendees included Mayor Kang Gijeong, Superintendent of Education Lee Jungseon, Dong District Mayor Lim Taek, Seo District Mayor Kim Ikang, Nam District Mayor Kim Byeongnae, Buk District Mayor Moon In, and Gwangsan District Mayor Park Byeonggyu.
They emphasized the importance of 'voting' as a constitutional right and pledged to ensure that all generations can participate as responsible voters by committing to six key action areas: expanding home voting stations for citizens with mobility difficulties; encouraging youth voter participation; guaranteeing practical voting rights for workers; providing daily-life benefits to voters; running the "Pause for a Moment, First-Time Voting in Life" support campaign; and ensuring convenient access to polling stations.
They stated, "Since the reinstatement of the direct presidential election system in 1987, Gwangju has recorded the highest voter turnout in the country and has been at the center of democracy. As this presidential election is a crucial event that will determine the future of the Republic of Korea, it is essential for all generations to exercise their precious rights as responsible voters."
The city plans to implement tailored support for the six key action areas to ensure that every citizen can participate in voting. First, to guarantee the voting rights of citizens with mobility challenges, the city will complete the installation guidance for home voting stations at 447 locations, including nursing facilities and hospitals.
Additionally, together with the presidents and student councils of 18 local universities, the city will carry out the "Vote with a Friend 1+1" campaign and encourage youth voter participation during the early voting period (May 29-30).
In cooperation with three major economic organizations, labor unions, major companies, and industrial complexes, the city will create a flexible voting environment. It will also partner with the Gwangju Small Business Association to offer discount events on bakery, food, and coffee, as well as the "May Gwangju Sharing Sale" (involving 49 businesses), and conduct the "6.3 Voting Bread" sharing sale in connection with these efforts.
The "Pause for a Moment, First-Time Voting in Life" support campaign will target third-year high school students, while educational and promotional activities to convey the significance of voting will be conducted for all grades in elementary, middle, and high schools.
The city and autonomous districts will conduct a comprehensive inspection of 357 polling stations and will prioritize installation on the first floor, set up temporary polling booths, and assign guides to ensure that the elderly, people with disabilities, pregnant women, and all citizens can vote conveniently.
Mayor Kang Gijeong stated, "With the official campaign for the 21st presidential election starting today, Gwangju promises proactive administration for 'greater and more convenient voter participation.' Gwangju's administration will never settle for the status quo and will always strive to move half a step ahead to build a stronger democracy."
