Unraveling the Narrative of Love Through Dance
Sejong University announced on May 12 that Professor Jang Sunhee of the Department of Dance and her Jang Sunhee Ballet Company will present a special project performance titled "Love Story: Seven Variations on Love" at the Haeoreum Theater of the National Theater of Korea on May 17 and 18.
This performance is an original production that combines classical ballet with a modern sensibility, exploring the timeless theme of love through seven different stories.
The show consists of seven love stories that reinterpret classical ballets such as "Swan Lake," "La Bayadere," "Romeo and Juliet," and "Carmen," blending them with familiar music including the chanson "Autumn Leaves."
This work poetically expresses the various aspects and nuances of love on stage, traversing the dignity of the classics and the language of the contemporary. Each episode delicately illuminates the deeper layers of human emotion.
The stage will feature principal dancers from the Korean National Ballet, including Jo Yeonjae and Heo Seomyeong, as well as Lee Seungyong from the Slovak National Ballet in Bratislava, Aleksandro Seitkaliev from Universal Ballet, and Lee Hayoun and Shim Eunji from the Korean National Ballet.
In addition, the performance will be accompanied by narration from announcer Lee Yoona and live music by violinist Heo Junhwa and cellists Lee Hochan and Lee Giljae.
Professor Jang, who serves as the artistic director for this production, stated, "Most love remains unfinished rather than complete, but that is what makes it more beautiful and memorable. I hope each audience member will recall the various scenes of love they have experienced in their own lives as they watch the performance."
Meanwhile, with its vision of "making ballet high-quality and popular," the Jang Sunhee Ballet Company has opened a new horizon for Korean creative ballet through a variety of original works such as "Hwang Jini" and "Faust," as well as reinterpretations of the classics.
