No need for re-authentication at financial institutions
Free physical USIM replacement available later
SK Telecom announced on May 11 that it will introduce a new security solution called "USIM Reset" starting from May 12. This technology effectively blocks illegal USIM cloning by changing only certain information within the USIM, without the need to physically replace the USIM card.
The "USIM Reset" technology works by updating some of the user identification and authentication information stored on the USIM with new data. Once this information is changed, any attempt to clone the USIM using leaked information is rendered ineffective, as system access is blocked. SK Telecom explained that various network functions operate simultaneously to provide the same level of security as a physical USIM replacement.
The biggest advantage of this solution is that user-stored information such as financial certificates, Tmoney, and contacts remains intact. As a result, users will no longer need to reset financial certificates or go through new authentication procedures with financial institutions, which were previously required when replacing a USIM. This is expected to significantly improve user convenience. The solution is available to both regular USIM and eSIM users.
For the time being, SK Telecom will offer the "USIM Reset" solution to customers who receive text messages regarding USIM replacement and visit T World stores, with plans to expand the service to a broader audience in the future. If a customer who has used the "USIM Reset" solution later wishes to physically replace their USIM, they can receive a one-time free replacement service at any T World store nationwide.
SK Telecom stated that, starting May 12, as USIM inventory becomes available, it will expand scheduling guidance for customers who have reserved USIM replacements. The company also plans to quickly address customer inconveniences through the "USIM Reset" solution and the expansion of eSIM self-activation.
