Candidate Safety Chief Appointed
Under the Candidate's Office
On May 10, the Democratic Party of Korea announced that the risk of a terrorist attack against presidential candidate Lee Jaemyung is increasing, and stated that it will operate a related task force (TF) and a reporting center.
Cho Seungrae, chief spokesperson for the Central Election Campaign Committee, said at a briefing held at the party headquarters in Yeouido, Seoul, "We discussed response plans in light of the growing threats of terrorism against candidate Lee," and made this announcement.
Accordingly, the Democratic Party has decided to form a terrorism response TF. The TF will be chaired by Kim Minseok, co-chair of the election committee, with Kim Yundeok, head of general affairs, serving as secretary. In addition, a terrorism reporting center will also be operated.
The Democratic Party will also appoint a 'candidate safety chief' to the candidate's office, who will be responsible for making comprehensive judgments and managing the scene to prepare for potential terrorist attacks. The candidate safety chief will be Representative Lim Hoseon, and the deputy chief will be Representative Lee Sangsik. Spokesperson Cho explained, "Both individuals have extensive experience in personal protection and field operations as former police officers, so we have appointed them as chief and deputy chief, respectively."
Spokesperson Cho stated, "By establishing the terrorism response TF, the terrorism reporting center, and the candidate safety chief, we will systematically gather information on terrorist threats against the candidate and respond thoroughly to neutralize all attempts." He added, "During the official campaign period, we have also planned and discussed additional methods of campaigning that both strengthen engagement with citizens and ensure safety."
Spokesperson Cho further emphasized, "The Democratic Party's Real Republic of Korea Election Committee will clearly demonstrate that no malicious attempt can succeed. Anyone or any group planning to harm candidate Lee will inevitably fail. We urge you to give up."
