The Democratic Party of Korea launched a fierce attack against the People Power Party for replacing its 21st presidential election candidate, demanding that the party voluntarily disband.
On the morning of May 10 at the Democratic Party headquarters in Yeouido, Seoul, Kim Minseok, the party’s standing co-chair of the election committee, held a press briefing and criticized the People Power Party, asking, "Are you a reckless Communist Party with neither law nor common sense?" He added, "If this is what you were going to do, why bother holding a primary?" He continued, "Is an outsider allowed to snatch the candidacy?" and insisted, "The People Power Party should voluntarily apply for dissolution."
Earlier that day, the emergency committee of the People Power Party began the process of canceling the nomination of presidential candidate Kim Moonsu and replacing him with former Prime Minister Han Ducksoo.
Chair Kim stated, "Kwon Seongdong and Kwon Youngse, the so-called 'double Kwon,' will go down in the history of conservative parties as the biggest fools, having tried to seize party leadership and ended up blowing up the party itself." He further criticized, "The double Kwon leadership that pushed for the candidate switch was not motivated by public duty for the party, but by dark personal ambitions to seize power."
Shin Hyunyoung, spokesperson for the election committee, said in a written briefing, "The People Power Party’s 'candidate snatching coup' that took place in the dead of night was reminiscent of a military operation," and added, "It goes beyond gangster movies and even makes one wonder if this is North Korea."
Co-chair Jeon Hyunhee also wrote on Facebook, "This is a coup for party leadership by the double Kwon?Kwon Youngse and Kwon Seongdong?following the December 3 military coup of insurrectionist Yoon Sukyeol," adding, "The insurrectionist forces that destroyed constitutional order have now obliterated intra-party democracy as well."
Chair Jeon emphasized, "A party that uses its primary candidates, members, and even the public in a fraudulent scheme, and repeatedly carries out coups, is an anti-democratic and unconstitutional party, and dissolution is the only answer."
Co-chair Kim Byungjoo also condemned the People Power Party’s candidate replacement, calling it "a presidential coup carried out in the middle of the night and a fraudulent primary that ignored democratic procedures." He added, "The People Power Party’s presidential coup at 3 a.m., which will remain a source of shame in the history of democracy, will be recorded as one of the three major incidents that broke out at dawn, alongside North Korea’s invasion in 1950 and the May 16 military coup in 1961."
