The Gwangju Autonomous Police Committee, chaired by Ahn Jin, has developed improvement measures through an analysis of the causes of two fatal traffic accident sites that occurred in Gwangsan-gu last month.
The committee recently conducted a joint inspection with the "Bitgoeul Traffic Accident Countermeasure Team" at the crosswalk under Sanwol Overpass in Gwangsan-gu, where a fatal traffic accident occurred, and on Saam-ro in Gwangsan-gu.
The "Bitgoeul Traffic Accident Countermeasure Team," led by the Autonomous Police Committee, is a consultative body comprised of 17 related organizations in the field of traffic. When a fatal traffic accident or an accident resulting in three or more serious injuries occurs, the team conducts an on-site joint inspection and promotes improvements to traffic safety facilities. This recent joint inspection involved six related organizations: the Autonomous Police Committee, Gwangju City, Gwangsan-gu, Gwangju Metropolitan Police Agency, Gwangsan Police Station, and the Korea Road Traffic Authority.
Regarding the accident at the crosswalk under Sanwol Overpass in Gwangsan-gu, the committee established improvement measures such as the installation of a raised crosswalk (a crosswalk combined with a speed bump), repaving of speed bumps, installation of protective fences around the crosswalk, and maintenance of roadside trees. In relation to the accident on Saam-ro in Gwangsan-gu, a flashing warning light (flash winker) was immediately installed to prevent speeding and enhance visibility, and a traffic signal will be installed in the future. The committee plans to continue monitoring to ensure that the improvement measures established this time are effectively implemented.
On May 10, Ahn Jin, Chairperson of the Gwangju Autonomous Police Committee, stated, "We are working to improve traffic safety facilities in cooperation with related organizations to protect the lives and safety of citizens," and added, "We will continue to do our utmost to prevent fatal traffic accidents in the future."
