Buyeo Yeohungmin Old House Selected for the “Gohyang Olrae” Project
Aims to Become a Creative and Exchange Hub for Young Artists
Buyeo County in South Chungcheong Province announced on May 9 that it has been selected for the “2025 Gohyang Olrae (GO鄕ALL來)” public project organized by the Ministry of the Interior and Safety, securing a special grant of 500 million won.
A total of 41 local governments nationwide participated in this competition, and Buyeo County was the only one selected from South Chungcheong Province.
The “Gohyang Olrae” project is a policy aimed at revitalizing local communities by attracting a resident population that stays for extended periods. Its core is to create an appealing environment for long-term stays by utilizing unique local resources and characteristics.
This year, the project was conducted in five categories: ▲Workation ▲Learncation ▲Local Venture ▲Local Study Abroad ▲Dual Residency.
The county was selected in the “Dual Residency” category.
Under the theme “Topophilia Buyeo for Young Artists,” the county plans to transform the old house of Yeohungmin in Buyeo, a 200-year-old local cultural heritage site, into a hub for young artists’ creation and exchange. “Topophilia” refers to an emotional attachment to a place, similar to one’s hometown.
The project will be promoted in various areas, including publicity using SNS and pop-up stores, supporting networks between artists and local residents, expanding resident participation, remodeling the old house and creating shared workspaces, and supporting creative activities such as local festivals and exhibitions.
Through these efforts, the county aims to attract and retain young artists for long-term stays, and expects to expand the resident population based on exchanges with local residents.
An official from the county stated, “We will thoroughly prepare for the remodeling of the old house and systematic project promotion to ensure the successful implementation of the project.”
Meanwhile, the old house of Yeohungmin in Buyeo is a late Joseon Dynasty house designated as a National Folk Cultural Heritage, located in Jungjeong-ri, Buyeo-eup. It is characterized by its typical nobleman’s house structure, while also reflecting architectural styles from the Gyeongsang Province region.
