On May 9, Gimpo City announced that it will accelerate the project by launching a service to establish the project implementation strategy, which will be led by Korea Water Resources Corporation starting in June.
This large-scale project was strategically planned after the launch of the 8th popularly elected administration to simultaneously resolve residents' health and environmental issues in the Geomuldae-ri area of Gimpo City, as well as to lay the foundation for advanced future industries.
The total project cost amounts to 5.752 trillion won, and the core objective is to create a sustainable, eco-friendly city on a site of approximately 4,919,000 square meters (about 1.49 million pyeong). Through this project, the city expects to generate 16.2 trillion won in production inducement effects and create about 119,000 jobs.
Following the project order in June, Gimpo City plans to designate the urban development zone by December 2026, select the project implementer in 2027, obtain approval for the implementation plan in 2028, begin site development and land sales in 2029, and complete the project by 2033.
The Gimpo Environmental Regeneration Innovation Complex Project is designed to bring about a transformation in the local economy and simultaneously address both residents' health and environmental issues in the Geomuldae-ri area.
Through this project, Gimpo City aims to develop not only eco-friendly residential spaces but also a future-oriented innovation cluster based on a Fourth Industrial Complex, thereby evolving into a business-friendly and sustainable city.
Gimpo City is also actively introducing environmental purification and restoration technologies throughout the entire process and is exploring various measures to achieve carbon neutrality. In addition, the city is planning cultural and welfare facilities and community programs to improve residents' quality of life.
Kim Byungsu, Mayor of Gimpo, stated, "Gimpo City will take full responsibility to ensure the successful completion of the Gimpo Environmental Regeneration Innovation Complex Project, which will establish the foundation for Gimpo's future industries. Through the Gimpo Environmental Regeneration Innovation Complex, Gimpo will become a competitive city leading future industries."
Meanwhile, Gimpo City completed consultations with the Ministry of Environment for the successful promotion of the project in November last year, and the project is currently progressing as planned.
