On May 9, Naju City announced that it will hold the 21st Yeongsanpo Skatefish and Hanwoo Festival from May 23 to 25 for three days at the Yeongsangang Riverside Sports Park area.
The Yeongsanpo Skatefish Festival, the longest-running food culture festival in the Naju region, has been renamed this year to the Yeongsanpo Skatefish and Hanwoo Festival.
Taking advantage of the region’s unique characteristics as the largest livestock hub in Jeollanam-do and the site of the Yeongsanpo Cattle Market, where more than 15,000 Hanwoo cattle are traded annually, the festival will feature permanent discounted Hanwoo beef sales and more.
Additionally, a variety of side events will be held, including tastings and sharing of aged skatefish, 50% discounted sales, auctions, four-line acrostic poem contests, and trivia quizzes, all centered around skatefish, which boasts a 600-year tradition.
There will also be exhibition and tasting booths where visitors can sample more than 10 types of southern Makgeolli that pair perfectly with aged skatefish, including offerings from Nohan Jeonggojip and Dado Chamjuga, sure to delight food and drink enthusiasts alike.
Invited singers are also expected to elevate the festival atmosphere. Mister Trot’s Jang Minho, filial singer Hyunsook, as well as Hyunjinwoo, Cha Hyorin, and Lee Cheonga, will present spectacular performances with the Yeongsangang River as their backdrop.
On the final night, May 25, a fireworks show will light up the night sky over the Yeongsangang River.
The festival grounds and surrounding area will be painted red with blooming poppies. Photo zones and walking trails will be created throughout the flower fields so that tourists can capture memorable moments.
Yoon Byungtae, Mayor of Naju, stated, "Through this festival, we plan to introduce aged skatefish, a signature dish of Jeollado and a healthy delicacy, along with premium Naju Hanwoo beef, to gourmets across the country, extending beyond Yeongsanpo and Naju."
