Automatic Enrollment Without Separate Application
Coverage Includes Accidents During Leave or Outings
Gangbuk District in Seoul (District Mayor Lee Soonhee) has launched support for a 'Military Service Youth Accident Insurance' program to protect local young people from unexpected accidents or illnesses that may occur during their military service.
This initiative automatically enrolls all young people currently serving in the military who are registered residents of Gangbuk District, without the need for a separate application process. Eligible beneficiaries include active-duty soldiers, full-time reserve forces, and those in alternative service roles (such as conscripted police officers and maritime police officers).
The main coverage includes: KRW 30 million in case of accidental or illness-related death, KRW 20 million for disability resulting from accident or illness, KRW 30,000 per day for up to 180 days of hospitalization due to accident or illness, KRW 150,000 per incident for fracture or burn diagnosis, KRW 2 million in consolation for mental illness, among a total of 13 coverage items.
Notably, the coverage extends not only to accidents occurring during training camp life but also to those that happen while on leave or during outings. In addition, the insurance can provide overlapping coverage regardless of compensation from other systems.
The insurance period runs from April 23, 2024, to April 22, 2025. If an eligible claim arises during this period, the individual or their family can file a claim with Meritz Fire & Marine Insurance within three years from the date of the accident (or the initial diagnosis date of the illness).
Gangbuk District stated, "We have launched this project to alleviate the burden on young people caused by unexpected accidents or illnesses during their military service," adding, "We will continue to actively pursue projects that provide practical support for the lives of young people."
