Chinese President Xi Jinping stated on May 8 that China and Russia must jointly respond to unilateralism and bullying as he met with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

According to state-run China Central Television (CCTV) on May 8, President Xi, during his meeting with President Putin at the Kremlin in Moscow, Russia, said, "In the face of current international unilateralism and hegemonic acts of bullying that run counter to the prevailing trends, China, together with Russia, bears the special responsibility of being major world powers and permanent members of the United Nations Security Council."

Expressions such as "unilateralism" and "hegemonic bullying" are frequently used by China when criticizing the United States. President Xi emphasized, "We must jointly promote a correct historical perspective on World War II, safeguard the authority and status of the United Nations, and resolutely protect the rights and interests of both China and Russia, as well as those of numerous developing countries." He added, "We should work hand in hand to advance an equal and orderly multipolar world and universally beneficial economic globalization."

He also stated, "I am very pleased to visit Russia again at the invitation of President Putin and to attend the 80th anniversary commemorative event of the Soviet Union's Great Patriotic War (World War II) victory." He further added, "The continued development and deepening of China-Russia relations is an inevitable choice for both countries to achieve mutual success and promote their respective development. It is also a call of the times to uphold international fairness and justice and to advance the reform of the global governance system."
