On May 8, Chungnam Province announced that it had received the "Marine Leisure Tourism Award in the Local Government Category" at the Korea Marine Leisure Tourism Expo, held at the Seoul Trade Exhibition and Convention Center (SETEC) that afternoon.
Hosted by the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries, this Marine Leisure Tourism Expo is being held from May 7 to May 10 at SETEC. The event serves as a platform to showcase the latest trends in marine tourism and the leisure industry, with participation from over 60 organizations, including local governments, public institutions, and companies.
Under the theme "Revitalized Fishing Villages! Chungcheongnam-do at the Center of Marine Tourism!", Chungnam Province was highly praised for revitalizing the marine leisure industry by utilizing existing fishing ports and for presenting a sustainable development model that integrates fishing villages with tourism.
As sustainable development models, the province introduced the Fishing Village New Deal 300 project and the Fishing Village New Vitalization Project, both aimed at regenerating fishing villages and ports.
These projects, which have been underway since 2019, are Chungnam Province's policy initiatives to address the crisis of disappearing fishing villages caused by declining and aging fishing populations. Currently, the projects are being implemented at 50 locations across the province, with a total project budget of 513.8 billion won.
The Fishing Village New Deal 300 project is focused on modernizing underdeveloped fishing villages and ports within the province, with the goal of revitalizing marine tourism and fostering innovative growth in fishing communities.
The Fishing Village New Vitalization Project is designed to prevent the disappearance of fishing villages by comprehensively establishing economic platforms, living platforms, and safety infrastructure in fishing villages and ports throughout the province.
With this award as a catalyst, the province plans to further advance its fishing village regeneration and marine tourism convergence projects, aiming to create a successful marine leisure tourism model where fishing villages, cities, visitors, and residents all thrive together.
Jeon Sangwook, Director of the Marine and Fisheries Bureau of Chungnam Province, stated, "Winning the grand prize at this Marine Leisure Tourism Expo will serve as nationwide recognition of the potential of Chungnam's marine leisure and tourism industries. Going forward, we will continue to present a new paradigm for marine tourism and revitalize the fishing village economy through sustainable marine leisure and tourism."
