The Jeonnam Provincial Autonomous Police Committee is joining forces with local residents, cities and counties, and the police to protect residents from abnormal motivation crimes that occur without clear cause.
The Jeonnam Provincial Autonomous Police Committee has selected a total of 17 cities and counties, including Hampyeong, Gwangyang, Yeongam, and Wando, as the target locations for the 2025 crime prevention security infrastructure installation project against abnormal motivation crimes, which was conducted through a public contest among cities and counties.
The crime prevention security infrastructure installation project aims to ensure the safety of residents by installing crime prevention facilities such as Smart Poles, intelligent CCTV cameras, and streetlights in areas where there is concern about violent crimes.
This project is being carried out over three years, from 2024 to 2026, with a total budget of 6.6 billion won. This year’s project budget is 1.75 billion won, with the province and the cities and counties sharing the cost at 40% and 60%, respectively.
For this year’s contest, all 17 cities and counties applied between January and February. Each city and county reflected the needs of local residents and, through working-level council meetings involving police stations and local governments, identified crime-prone areas such as neighborhoods with large foreign populations, densely populated areas, and regular ferry terminals without CCTV installation.
In April, an expert evaluation committee, including external members and the Jeonnam Provincial Police Agency, conducted a review. As a result, all applicant cities and counties were selected as target locations after evaluating the necessity of the project, resident participation, implementation commitment, and effectiveness.
In particular, a notable feature this year is that additional points were awarded for installing crime prevention facilities in areas with large foreign populations, aiming to create a safe crime prevention environment for both local and foreign residents.
The Jeonnam Provincial Autonomous Police Committee plans to closely cooperate with the selected cities and counties and police stations and thoroughly monitor the progress of the project to ensure its smooth implementation.
Chairperson Jeong Soonkwan stated, "We will further expand security infrastructure such as CCTV, emergency bells, and Smart Poles to ensure the safety of residents from abnormal motivation crimes that occur without clear cause," adding, "We will continue to build a robust social safety net through local resident participation and collaboration with cities, counties, and police stations so that residents can feel secure."
