"People Power Party Unable to Accept Representative Kim"
On May 8, Lee Jaemyung, the presidential candidate of the Democratic Party of Korea, commented on Representative Kim Sanguk, who left the People Power Party, saying, "Politicians who uphold principles and make decisions and take action from the perspective of the people are rare and valuable. I think it would be good to meet together soon."
On the 8th, Kim Sanguk, a member of the People Power Party who had been under pressure to leave the party regarding the December 3 emergency martial law and former President Yoon Sukyeol's impeachment, announced his intention to leave the party after paying respects at the National Cemetery in Dongjak-gu, Seoul. After attending the Democratic Party’s Central Election Committee’s Policy Agreement Ceremony for Livelihood Issues at the Korea Federation of SMEs in Yeouido, Seoul, Lee told reporters, "Not only Representative Kim, but also others with diverse perspectives and genuine patriotism, I am trying my best to meet and work together with as many of them as possible."
Lee stated, "The fact that Representative Kim left the People Power Party seems to indicate that the party is unable to accommodate people like him, who have clear positions and pursue politics for the people," adding, "This is truly regrettable from the perspective of the people and the nation."
He continued, "A political party, at its core, should share a broad direction, but within that, there can be a variety of specific views and positions. However, to essentially expel Representative Kim just because he took a stance on the insurrection issue that aligns with common sense, the Constitution, the law, and the expectations of the people, will likely become a significant burden for the People Power Party."
He went on to say, "For the Democratic Party, recovery and growth are crucial tasks right now," and added, "We must go beyond minor differences and move forward together in unity."
Earlier that day, after paying respects at the Seoul National Cemetery in Dongjak-gu, Seoul, Representative Kim announced his intention to leave the People Power Party. Kim stated, "If given the opportunity, I would like to meet with presidential candidates such as Lee Jaemyung of the Democratic Party and Lee Junseok of the Reform New Party to discuss current issues and share concerns about the direction of the country."
