On May 8, Jeonnam Province announced that it had achieved first place for the second consecutive year in the quantitative indicators of the Ministry of the Interior and Safety's 2025 Local Government Joint Evaluation (based on 2024 performance), with a 100% score.
This marks the only case among the 17 provinces and metropolitan cities nationwide to achieve 100% in the quantitative indicators for two consecutive years, following last year. Many expect that this record of two consecutive years at 100% will be difficult to surpass in the future.
The Local Government Joint Evaluation is a comprehensive assessment of local governments conducted jointly by the Ministry of the Interior and Safety and other central administrative agencies. It targets the 17 provinces and metropolitan cities nationwide, evaluating delegated national administrative tasks, government-subsidized projects, and the implementation of major national policies.
This year, the evaluation covered a total of 114 indicators, including 97 quantitative indicators (assessment of goal achievement) and 17 qualitative indicators (assessment of best practices).
In the quantitative indicators, Jeonnam Province achieved its targets in all areas, including those considered particularly challenging such as office building energy reduction rates, local price stabilization management performance, and the priority purchase rate for environmentally friendly and socially valuable products, securing first place nationwide.
In the qualitative evaluation, two initiatives?'Promotion of Policies to Expand Cultural Accessibility' and 'Activation of Bicycle Use'?were selected as outstanding cases.
Yoon Jin-ho, Director of Planning and Coordination for Jeonnam Province, stated, "This excellent result was achieved through the joint efforts of the residents, the provincial government, and public officials in the cities and counties," adding, "We will continue to do our utmost to achieve outstanding results in various fields in the future."
With the 2024 performance-based Local Government Joint Evaluation now complete, Jeonnam Province plans to select 10 outstanding cities and counties and 1 developing city or county among its 22 cities and counties by the end of May, providing a total of 1 billion KRW in financial incentives distributed according to performance.
The results of the joint evaluation and best practices for each province and metropolitan city can be found on the Ministry of the Interior and Safety's 'Naegojang Alimi' website.
