West Sea Coast Guard Conducts Twice-Daily Emergency Helicopter Transports

The West Sea Regional Coast Guard (headed by Lee Myungjun) is serving as a guardian of public safety at sea, dispatching helicopters twice a day to transport emergency patients from island regions, among other duties.


According to the West Sea Regional Coast Guard on May 8, the Mokpo National Maritime University Air Unit and the Yeosu Air Unit each made emergency sorties on May 7, rescuing two people?one off the coast of Yeonggwang and another on Geomundo Island in Yeosu.

The Mokpo National Maritime University Air Unit received a report around 4:00 p.m. that day that a man in his 60s had become stranded in a mudflat while kayaking near Baekbawi Beach in Yeonggwang. The unit immediately dispatched a helicopter and rescued the man.


The Yeosu Air Unit received a report at approximately 5:30 p.m. the same day that a resident in his 70s on Geomundo Island in Yeosu had been bitten by a snake. The unit transported the patient by helicopter so that he could receive treatment on the mainland.


A representative from the West Sea Regional Coast Guard stated, "It is essential to check your equipment and the tide schedule before engaging in leisure activities," and added, "We will do our utmost to protect the lives and safety of the public by maintaining a readiness posture to respond quickly to emergencies involving patients on islands or at sea."
