Sequential Delivery Begins for New Vehicles Enhanced for Safety and Convenience
On the morning of May 8, Busan Transportation Corporation announced that the first set of light rail vehicles to be deployed on the Yangsan Line had been delivered to the Yangsan Line vehicle depot for the first time.
This delivery is one of the key procedures in the construction of the Yangsan Line, a project being carried out by the corporation under commission from Yangsan City. The line is scheduled to open in 2026 after mainline trial runs and comprehensive test operations.
The Yangsan Line is an 11.43 km route connecting Nopo Station on Busan Metro Line 1, passing through Yangsan Jungang Station on Line 2, and extending to Bukjeong-dong in Yangsan City. The line will feature a total of seven stations. Since construction began in 2011, the project has reached 89% completion, with a total project cost of approximately 791 billion KRW.
Since signing a supply contract with Woojin Industrial Systems, the vehicle manufacturer, in 2022, the corporation has directly managed the design, production, and quality verification of a total of nine sets (18 cars). The initial set of vehicles delivered this time is designed with the latest specifications optimized for a single-track unmanned operation system, ensuring both technological safety and passenger convenience.
This vehicle features, for the first time in domestic light rail, an integrated inverter (VVVF-SIV) and a bogie-specific braking control system. The integrated inverter provides both space efficiency and stability, while the bogie-specific braking system is a high-safety control technology designed to prevent issues with individual braking units from affecting the operation of the entire train. The efficiency of regenerative braking has also been improved, contributing to energy savings.
Additionally, the vehicle is equipped with a 'window dimming device' that automatically renders the windows opaque when passing through residential areas, a duct-type air conditioning system with enhanced cooling efficiency, and a cabin fan, all reflecting a design that carefully considers both passenger comfort and the privacy of nearby residents.
The corporation plans to thoroughly verify the safety of the delivered vehicles through test runs at the vehicle depot and on the mainline, and to sequentially deliver the remaining eight sets by August.
Lee Byungjin, President of Busan Transportation Corporation, stated, "We will ensure that the remaining sets are also introduced after thorough quality verification," and added, "We will leverage our unique nationwide experience in urban rail construction and operation to maximize transportation convenience for Yangsan citizens."
