Kim Sangwook Announces Departure from People Power Party... "Will Carefully Consider My Future Role"

"Become Conservatives with Inclusiveness and Dignity"
Hopes to Meet with Candidates Lee Jaemyung and Lee Junseok

Kim Sangwook, a lawmaker from the People Power Party, announced his departure from the party on May 8. He said he would decide on his role during the presidential election after further consideration.

On this day, after paying his respects at the National Cemetery, Kim stated, "I am leaving the People Power Party," and added, "From now on, I will walk the path of true democratic conservatism, not that of far-right or reactionary conservatism."

He said, "I have earnestly hoped that the People Power Party, as a traditional conservative party, would fulfill its role for the nation and the people. Out of that conviction, I continued to offer candid advice, even though it was lonely and difficult," and continued, "However, I can only accept with a heavy heart that the People Power Party is now in an extreme situation where the possibility for change has disappeared."

He also delivered a message to conservative supporters. He said, "In 2025, I ask that you make your political judgments based on today's conservative values: democracy, the rule of law, fairness, rationality, openness, inclusiveness, and freedom." He appealed, "Become conservatives who accept new things, learn from differences, and uphold principles with dignity and inclusiveness."

Regarding his role during the presidential election, he said he would consider it further. Kim stated, "I will carefully and responsibly consider whom and in what way I will support and work with," and added, "I will think deeply, always with the interest of the people as my standard, and once I have decided on a direction, I will share my honest opinion."

He also expressed his intention to meet with Lee Jaemyung, the presidential candidate of the Democratic Party, and Lee Junseok, the presidential candidate of the Reform Party, regarding his future political activities. He said, "If the opportunity arises, I would like to meet with candidates such as Lee Jaemyung and Lee Junseok to discuss current issues and share thoughts on the direction of the country."
