Lee Announces Senior Policy Pledges: "Gradual Reduction of Basic Pension Couple Deduction" (Update)

Lee Jaemyung, the presidential candidate of the Democratic Party of Korea, announced his policy pledges for seniors on Parents’ Day, including the gradual reduction of the basic pension reduction for couples, the introduction of a state responsibility system for elderly care, and the expansion of public jobs.

On May 8, Lee stated on his Facebook page that he would gradually reduce the “basic pension couple reduction,” which currently deducts 20% from the calculated basic pension amount when both spouses receive the pension. Lee added, “Through this, I will help elderly couples enjoy a more comfortable life.”

He also unveiled plans to implement a state responsibility system for elderly care, including the expansion of community-integrated care, alleviating the burden of caregiving expenses, and expanding the “primary care physician system” for medically vulnerable groups.

Lee noted, “The bill for providing meals five days a week at senior community centers, led by the Democratic Party, has passed the National Assembly,” and announced plans to expand support for senior leisure and welfare facilities such as senior community centers.

He also pledged to expand customized reverse mortgage programs and public jobs to ensure stable income in old age, and to introduce a public trust system to assist with asset management.

In addition, his pledges include improving the reduction of national pension benefits for working seniors, lowering the age requirement and increasing the number of implants covered by health insurance.

Lee stated, “Each and every senior is part of the history of our Republic of Korea,” adding, “Now, what is needed is not poverty and loneliness, but fair treatment for their dedication and hard work.” He continued, “A truly advanced nation is one where the state takes responsibility for the well-being of its seniors.”
