Replacement of 13 Outdated Rapid Chargers Over 5 Years Old
Installation of 30 Thermal Imaging Cameras in 19 Public Parking Lots Equipped with Rapid and Slow Electric Vehicle Chargers
Seongdong-gu, Seoul (District Mayor Jeong Wonoh), announced that it has newly established an "Electric Vehicle Fire Prevention System" in public parking lots to enhance the safety of electric vehicle charging facilities and improve the speed of fire response.
First, in accordance with the National Fire Agency's guidelines and the Seoul Metropolitan Government's ordinance on fire prevention and safety facility support for electric vehicle-only parking zones, the district relocated the rapid electric vehicle charger from the third basement level to the area near the first basement entrance of the Doseon-dong public parking lot. This relocation is intended to make fire suppression more accessible.
Starting in October, the district plans to gradually replace 13 outdated rapid chargers that have been in use for more than five years, with support from the Seoul Metropolitan Government. This is to ensure that residents can use electric vehicles more safely and conveniently without inconvenience.
Thermal imaging cameras have been installed in all 19 public parking lots equipped with both rapid and slow electric vehicle chargers, totaling 30 cameras. These cameras are expected to enhance early detection of electric vehicle fires, such as battery thermal runaway incidents, thereby improving initial response capabilities.
From May, both the Seongdong-gu Urban Management Corporation control room and a professional monitoring company will conduct simultaneous 24-hour monitoring. If an abnormal temperature is detected, an alarm will be triggered, prompting immediate dispatch to the site and notification to 119 emergency services.
A four-step response manual has also been established, covering everything from resident guidance and 119 fire brigade suppression measures in the event of an electric vehicle fire, to cause analysis and the development of measures to prevent recurrence. With a systematic reporting system in place, swift response is expected to significantly alleviate residents' concerns.
Jeong Wonoh, Mayor of Seongdong-gu, stated, "With the establishment of this 'Electric Vehicle Fire Prevention System,' we are creating an environment where residents can use public parking lots with greater peace of mind," adding, "We will continue to thoroughly protect the safety of residents in their daily lives through ongoing safety inspections and facility improvements."
