First Place in Seven Events: Basketball, Shooting, Badminton, Taekwondo,
Golf, Jokgu, and Baduk
Geochang County in Gyeongnam announced on May 8 that it participated in the 64th Gyeongsangnam-do Provincial Sports Festival, held in Jinju, and finished the event as the top military division team, taking first place in seven events.
At this year’s festival, Geochang County fielded the largest team in the military division, with a total of 707 participants, including 527 athletes and 180 officials. Starting with winning the award for best team entrance at the opening ceremony, the county achieved first place in basketball, shooting (winning the event for the 11th consecutive time), badminton, taekwondo, golf, jokgu, and baduk. The team also earned second place in tennis, wrestling, weightlifting, and ground golf, and third place in volleyball, demonstrating outstanding performance across the board.

In particular, the golf team claimed the top spot for the first time in 20 years, while the jokgu team secured its fourth consecutive victory. The badminton, taekwondo, basketball, jokgu, baduk, shooting, volleyball, and tennis teams once again proved themselves to be the strongest in the military division within Gyeongnam Province. Additionally, the U-18 soccer team competed as the representative in the high school division and finished as the runner-up in the military division.
With a total fertility rate of 1.20 in the military division?the highest in the province for two consecutive years?Geochang County’s strong talent pool produced multiple multi-event winners. Seven athletes, including Baek Geumhyeong, Kim Jeongsan, Choi Seunghwan, Choi Seunghyeon, and Ryu Hanna (Daeseongil High School), became triple champions in weightlifting. Eight athletes, including Choi Woo-hyeok (Arim High School), Choi Eunsoo (Jungang High School), Jeong Hyoeun (Geochang Girls’ High School), Jeong Minseo (Geochang Girls’ High School), and Kim Yukyeong (Arim High School), became double champions in shooting. Kang Sanghyo was a double champion in golf, and Park Jinseo (Daeseongil High School) and Kim Minseong were double champions in wrestling, among several others who brought honor to Geochang County with their outstanding performances.
Throughout the festival, Geochang County and Yoo Inhwan, president of the Geochang County Sports Association, along with staff, visited the various event venues to cheer on the athletes and boost their morale.
Meanwhile, the Geochang County Sports Association plans to hold a disbandment ceremony for the 64th Provincial Sports Festival, where they will present an overall review of the event and recognize outstanding disciplines.
