Sanggap Lee, Deputy Mayor of Culture and Economy of Gwangju City, resigned after one year in office.
According to Gwangju City on May 7, Deputy Mayor Lee submitted his resignation to the city earlier that morning. He concluded his official duties with a retirement ceremony on the same day.
It has been reported that Deputy Mayor Lee resigned to join the Democratic Party of Korea's Central Election Countermeasures Committee as a member of the legal advisory group. Lee, who is a lawyer by profession, has previously served as Director of Legal Affairs and Director of Human Rights at the Ministry of Justice, co-representative of the Citizens' Group with the Grandmothers of the Labor Mobilization Corps, Chair of the Human Rights and Legal Aid Committee of the Gwangju Bar Association, and Head of the Gwangju-Jeonnam Branch of Lawyers for a Democratic Society.
A city official explained, "The Democratic Party has repeatedly requested his participation as a legal advisor. After the Supreme Court's ruling on candidate Lee Jae-myung, the party's requests increased, and with the supplementary budget now finalized, he decided to join the Democratic Party's campaign team."
