Inspection of Safety Management in Dongbuk Line Light Rail Tunnel
Thorough Efforts to Alleviate Residents' Anxiety and Prevent Accidents through Detailed Diagnosis such as GPR Survey
Lee Pilhyung, the mayor of Dongdaemun-gu in Seoul, visited the Dongbuk Line light rail construction site on the afternoon of May 7 to inspect the progress of the project and the status of safety management. This visit was prompted by growing anxiety among residents following a series of ground subsidence incidents near large-scale excavation sites.
The Dongbuk Line urban railway private investment project is being carried out across sections 1 to 4, with a total length of 13.4 kilometers, and is scheduled for completion in 2027. A total of 16 stations will be constructed, with Jegidong Station and Korea University Station located within Dongdaemun-gu. Currently, tunnel excavation and structural installation work are underway in this section.
This inspection focused on the area near Yongdu Station (Line 2) within Section 1 of the Dongbuk Line. After receiving reports on the progress of the project and safety management measures, a GPR (Ground Penetrating Radar) survey was conducted at the excavation site.
Mayor Lee Pilhyung personally inspected the construction site, which is underway at a depth of approximately 38 meters underground, and urged those involved to exercise particular caution to prevent safety accidents.
Mayor Lee stated, "We will continue to work closely with the Seoul Metropolitan Government and related agencies to thoroughly prepare and prevent ground subsidence incidents."
The Seoul Metropolitan Government conducts GPR surveys once a month at large-scale excavation sites. Dongdaemun-gu has also designated the areas surrounding major large construction sites as priority inspection targets and is conducting cavity surveys and other measures to thoroughly prevent ground subsidence incidents.
