Pukyong National University College of Environmental and Marine Science and Louisiana State University Sign MOU on Marine and Climate Change Cooperation

Declaration of Practical Marine Cooperation at This Year's Our Ocean Conference International Symposium

Pukyong National University College of Environmental and Marine Science & G-LAMP Project Group and Louisiana State University in the United States signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) on April 30 to strengthen joint cooperation in the fields of marine science and climate change response.

The two universities signed the MOU at the "2025 Our Ocean Conference (OOC) International Symposium" held at the Pukyong Convention Hall of Pukyong National University on the same day, and agreed to implement practical cooperation in the marine sector.

This MOU, under the symposium theme "Bridging Oceans: U.S.-East Asia Collaboration in Ocean Science and Climate Change Resilience," is recognized as a new turning point in marine science and technology cooperation between the two countries. Its core objectives include enhancing climate change resilience, restoring marine ecosystems, and jointly developing sustainable coastal management policies.

Through this MOU, the two universities plan to collaborate on joint implementation tasks such as: analyzing coastal changes due to climate change and sharing related data; conducting joint research and technology exchange for coastal ecosystem conservation; operating faculty and graduate student exchange programs between the universities; and regularly holding Korea-U.S. joint symposia and workshops on coastal science.

Professor Ryu Junghyung (Director of the ICSC Center) and Professor Jang Hogeun of Pukyong National University, who invited the U.S. delegation, stated, "This Korea-U.S. agreement is expected to become a model case of coastal science cooperation that not only yields research results but also makes tangible contributions to policy and field practices. Based on the International Coastal Science Center (ICSC), specialized institutions from Korea and the United States will jointly lead research integrating coastal and climate sciences."

This MOU is expected to play a key catalytic role in strengthening the strategic linkage of marine cooperation between East Asia and North America, and in expanding the international scientific network in the marine sector in the era of climate crisis.
