This workshop is the first tangible outcome following the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MOU) between Gyeonggi Province and Colorado State University in the United States in September 2024, aimed at strengthening cooperation in the field of animal quarantine and related areas. It is being organized as an international joint event.

Gyeonggi Province expects the event to serve as a platform for sharing the latest quarantine technologies for major livestock infectious diseases, including highly pathogenic avian influenza (AI), African swine fever (ASF), and lumpy skin disease (LSD).

On the first day, May 19, the workshop will focus on responses to zoonotic diseases, including highly pathogenic avian influenza (AI) and the recently emerging bovine influenza. In-depth presentations will be given from various perspectives on topics such as the current status of mammalian influenza surveillance in Korea, the potential use of AI vaccines, interspecies transmission of avian influenza viruses, and community-level quarantine strategies.

On May 20, the focus will shift to responses to African swine fever (ASF), with practical, field-oriented presentations on domestic and international quarantine case studies, the role of biosecurity and FAO online training, and the current status of ASF vaccine development both in Korea and abroad.

On May 21, the workshop will concentrate on response strategies for lumpy skin disease, which was first detected in Korea (Seosan) in October 2023. Topics to be shared include trends and quarantine measures for LSD outbreaks in Korea, animal disease surveillance systems, preemptive response plans, risk assessment-based quarantine strategies, and the relationship between epidemiological indicators and disease management strategies.

The workshop will feature participation from international experts, including Professor Mo Salman, a world-renowned authority in veterinary epidemiology, Professor Sangeeta Rao (CSU), and veterinarian Oh Yooni (FAO Asia-Pacific Regional Office), who will lead in-depth discussions. From Korea, representatives from the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs, the Animal and Plant Quarantine Agency, faculty from Seoul National University, Kangwon National University, and Chonnam National University, as well as stakeholders from academia and industry, will participate to seek practical quarantine solutions.

Additionally, after each thematic presentation, there will be comprehensive discussions and on-site Q&A sessions between presenters and attendees, providing an opportunity to exchange diverse opinions and derive effective response measures.

Lee Kangyoung, Director General of the Livestock and Animal Welfare Bureau of Gyeonggi Province, stated, "This workshop will be a valuable opportunity to strengthen the international animal quarantine network and to introduce advanced quarantine technologies and establish a systematic response system. As the event is open to not only livestock industry professionals and quarantine experts but also anyone interested in livestock diseases and food safety, we encourage wide interest and participation."
