Changwon Prison to Officially Begin Construction on the 12th ... All Contracts Completed

Yoon Hanhong Expresses Deep Gratitude to Residents
for Their Patience and Endurance Over Many Years

Changwon Prison in Gyeongnam has completed all contracts and will officially begin construction on the 12th.

According to Yoon Hanhong, a member of the People Power Party representing Masan Hoewon-gu in Changwon, the Ministry of Justice has finalized contracts for the construction and project management services for the "Changwon Prison Relocation and New Construction Project." As a result, full-scale construction is set to commence on the 12th.

Changwon Prison to Officially Begin Construction on the 12th ... All Contracts Completed Yoon Hanhong, Member of the National Assembly.

The relocation of Changwon Prison has been a long-standing aspiration of residents in Masan Hoewon-gu. When the prison was established in Hoeseong-dong in 1970, the area was considered the outskirts of the city. However, as the city expanded and the surrounding area became urbanized, the prison began to cause inconvenience for residents and became an obstacle to regional development. For this reason, demands for the relocation of the prison have been continuously raised since the 1980s.

The relocation project, which had stalled for a long time due to a lack of breakthroughs, became possible thanks to the active efforts and determination of Yoon Hanhong. Although the construction contract was completed in November last year (with Gyeryong Construction Industry) and the groundbreaking was expected to proceed, there were several hurdles, including two failed attempts to select a project management company due to budget shortages.

In response, Yoon held working-level consultations with the Ministry of Justice, the Ministry of Economy and Finance, and the Public Procurement Service to secure additional budget. Finally, in April, Younghwa Keystone Architects was selected as the project management company, enabling the project to officially begin.

The Changwon Prison relocation and new construction project will cover a site area of 238,278 square meters and a total floor area of 44,614 square meters. It will be built as a modern correctional facility capable of accommodating 1,500 people. The total project cost is 235.6 billion won, with completion targeted for November 2029.

In connection with this, the Ministry of Justice also plans to hold a resident briefing session on the 23rd. During the session, the ministry will provide detailed information on the future project schedule and actively gather feedback from residents.

Yoon Hanhong stated, "I deeply thank all the residents who have patiently endured inconvenience for such a long time," adding, "Now that we are taking the first real step, I will continue to pay close attention to ensure the project proceeds without any setbacks."
