Suwon City in Gyeonggi Province is operating a "Voluntary Pet Registration Period" to establish a mature pet culture and prevent the loss and abandonment of pets.
Suwon City announced on May 6 that it will accept the first round of voluntary registrations for dogs and cats aged two months or older, kept as companion animals, from May 1 to June 30. The second round of registrations will be accepted from September 1 to October 31.
Registration can be completed by visiting an animal hospital designated as a registration agency to have a microchip implanted (internal type), or by purchasing and attaching an external collar tag (external type). Pet owners can choose either method and submit a pet registration application to an authorized registration agency.
Authorized pet registration agencies can be found on the National Animal Protection Information System website (https://www.animal.go.kr).
If the owner, address, or contact information changes, the changes must be reported either by visiting the relevant district office, or online via Government24 (https://www.gov.kr) or the National Animal Protection Information System.
Registering a pet helps quickly identify the owner if the pet is lost. In addition, registered pets can access certain public facilities, such as pet playgrounds.
If a pet subject to registration is not registered, or if changes are not reported, a fine of up to 1 million won may be imposed in accordance with the Animal Protection Act.
