The Songjeongdong Urban Regeneration Eoullim Center, a key facility for urban regeneration in Songjeongdong, Gwangju, Gyeonggi-do, is scheduled for completion in May.
The Songjeong Urban Regeneration Project in Gwangju was selected as a Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport public project in 2019, and various initiatives are being implemented, including the establishment of the Urban Regeneration Eoullim Center, the Songjeong Cultural Center, the Ujeongkke Safe Village Project, the Happy Nest Renovation Project, and the Ujeongkke Community Care Project.
The Songjeongdong area was a bustling cattle market in the 1960s, with vibrant commercial activities such as restaurants and slaughterhouses. However, following the closure of the cattle market and subsequent urbanization, the village gradually declined. More recently, the decline has accelerated due to population outflow and the deterioration of the residential environment caused by new urban development.
In response, urban regeneration projects are being promoted to revitalize the area, including improvements to the residential environment, community care initiatives, and the Ujeongkke Small Economy Revitalization Project.
The Urban Regeneration Eoullim Center, which is being completed this time, is located at 101-27 Songjeongdong, Gwangju, Gyeonggi-do, and consists of two basement floors and three above-ground floors, with a total floor area of 3,449.16 square meters. It will provide various community infrastructure facilities such as a parking lot, a senior classroom, a community care center, and a small library, and is expected to contribute to revitalizing the local community.
Kim Tae-su, Director of Urban Regeneration at Gyeonggi-do, said, "We are actively utilizing idle spaces in the region to promote urban regeneration projects," and added, "We expect these projects to breathe new life into declining areas and the old downtown, and we ask for the active participation of local residents."
