"Kim Moonsoo Agrees on the Need for Unification"
"Behind-the-Scenes Contact with Han Ducksoo to Begin as Soon as Possible"
On May 4, the People Power Party decided to establish an organization within the party to promote the unification of presidential candidates Kim Moonsoo of the party and Han Ducksoo, an independent presidential preliminary candidate.
Shin Dongwook, chief spokesperson of the People Power Party, met with reporters after the party's election committee's inaugural meeting at the National Assembly on the same day. He stated, "Since the Emergency Response Committee has now handed over to the candidate's side, we have decided to quickly establish a unification promotion organization under the election committee and use this body to negotiate the unification issue with Han's side."
Chief spokesperson Shin said, "Basically, the candidate has full authority over election strategy," but added, "The candidate also strongly agrees with the overarching premise of pursuing unification and defeating Lee Jaemyung, the Democratic Party's presidential candidate."
Regarding the timing of the launch of the unification promotion organization, he said, "It should be done as soon as possible," but explained, "We cannot set a specific date because there is a counterpart. Since there is another party involved, we cannot proceed solely according to our schedule, so behind-the-scenes contact will be necessary."
Chief spokesperson Shin addressed speculation about deadlines such as May 7 and May 11 for unification, saying, "We will need to review this once the promotion organization is established. After forming the organization, we will officially confirm Han's side's intentions. So far, there has been no official agreement between our candidate and Han's side."
Regarding the possible inclusion of former representative Han Donghoon, who lost in the party's final primary the previous day, in the election committee, he said, "The candidate spoke with him directly this morning, and Han reportedly asked for a little time to think about it."
