On May 5, a giant lantern will brightly illuminate the area around Seokchon Lake.
Songpa District (District Mayor Seo Gangseok) announced that, starting with Buddha's Birthday, it will officially launch special content utilizing "The Sphere."
In April, a new media art installation called "The Sphere," a 7-meter-diameter sphere, was unveiled at the Seokchon Lake intersection in Songpa District. With its massive ball-shaped exterior and dazzling lights, it quickly became a new landmark of Seokchon Lake.
The district is presenting 27 themed videos as exclusive content for "The Sphere," taking into account artistry, aesthetics, and public interest. The content includes a solar system series, a famous paintings series, the four seasons of Seokchon Lake, works by emerging artists, and the Haha and Hoho characters. In addition, a commemorative series reflecting timely events is considered one of the highlights.
To celebrate Buddha's Birthday, which is the first commemorative day since "The Sphere" was introduced, the district will present a special 10-minute segment within a 30-minute video, visualizing a giant lantern. Inspired by the Buddha statue at Seokguram Grotto in Gyeongju, a massive lotus flower will envelop the entire Sphere.
Going forward, the district will continue to screen special videos for various commemorative days to convey the significance of each occasion to visitors. In addition to major national holidays such as Seollal (Lunar New Year) and Chuseok (Korean Thanksgiving), the district plans to release timely content for March 1st Movement Day (3·1 Jeol), Liberation Day (Gwangbokjeol), National Foundation Day (Gaecheonjeol), Hangeul Day, Christmas, Family Month in May, and Patriots and Veterans Month in June.
Audience participation content also plays a significant role in the popularity of "The Sphere." By interacting with kiosks installed around the installation, visitors can see their input reflected on the screen in real time. They can create personalized messages by combining words, or take photos and transform them into unique art styles such as oil painting, ink painting, or webtoon, making participation especially enjoyable.
On April 21, the district hosted a familiarization tour, inviting foreign influencers of various nationalities and ages to promote "The Sphere" to the world. After experiencing the content, participants showed great interest by posting certification photos on social media.
Seo Gangseok, Mayor of Songpa District, stated, "In May, the largest lantern in Korea will be featured, and in June, videos honoring those who served the nation will follow for Patriots and Veterans Month. We will continue to communicate with residents through Songpa's new landmark, 'The Sphere,' and deliver fun and inspiration with even richer media art."
