Kyodo News and NHK reported that on May 3, a helicopter belonging to the China Coast Guard temporarily violated Japanese airspace near the Senkaku Islands (known as Diaoyu Dao in China).
At around 12:20 p.m. that day, four China Coast Guard vessels entered Japanese territorial waters surrounding the Senkaku Islands, and one helicopter flew into and violated Japanese airspace.
The Japan Air Self-Defense Force scrambled fighter jets in response.
NHK stated, "This is the fourth confirmed case of a Chinese aircraft violating Japanese airspace, and the third such incident occurring near the Senkaku Islands."
The Senkaku Islands are an area subject to a territorial dispute between Japan and China.
